Funtwo in TV InterviewOne of the joys of living in 2008 is the chance to become an overnight star thanks to websites like YouTube. And one of YouTubes biggest stars is a Korean man known as Funtwo, whose rendition of Johann Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” on an electric guitar three years ago made him an internet sensation.

His video features a mysterious character playing his guitar with such gusto that it captured the imagination of viewers all over the planet, attracting over 49 million views.

The man behind the Funtwo screen name is 24-year-old Jay Lim, who studies at Auckland University, New Zealand. [Where I'm from - NZ that is.]

Lim took last year off to see the world, finding time to busk in places such as Prague and Mexico. He filmed his adventures and it went straight on to YouTube.

Around eight years ago, Lim did not even know what a guitar was. But that all changed when heard a small grunge band hailing from Seattle. [Nirvarna.]

Lim began taking guitar lessons, but found it too boring, and instead opted to teach himself.

After making sure his face was hidden by a hat, he posted some videos on a Korean music site under the name Funtwo, so he could get feedback on his progress.

Another user named guitar90 grabbed the video and put it on YouTube, where it became a sensation.

But a year into the sensation another YouTube user decided to pose as Funtwo.

Lim decided it was time to reveal his identity and quickly found himself all over Korean TV as well as CNN, MBC, CBC and KBS.

And just when he thought the hype about him was winding down, American band Weezer released a new chart-topping song named “Pork and Beans”, featuring a parody of Lim’s internet video.

“The intro scene was exactly like my video,” he says. “Dark bedroom, backlight from back window, exactly the same.”

Lim says that he has no big plans for forming his own band, and is knuckling down to finish his degree.
